The 3 Pillars of an Honest Empire
1.
It helps you accomplish your life goals
Your work should allow you to check-off objectives you have in life.
- Places you want to go
- People you want to meet
- Experience you want to have
Life is too short. LATER isn’t an option.
2.
It allows you to grow into your ideal self
Who do you want to be personally? Professionally?
- What skills do you want to have?
- How is your health? Mentally? Physically?
Your work should bring you closer to who you want to become, not further from it.
3.
It gives you a sense of contribution
You’ll never be happy, if you’re always trying to make yourself happy.
You need to feel like you’re contributing to something BIGGER than YOURSELF.
You need to make the world a better place in some way, shape or form.
Sina, Author of Honest Empires
On a scale from 1 to 10, how satisfied are you with your life right now?
1 being “I hate it”, 10 being “I couldn’t imagine it being any better.”
Got the number?
Great.
Hold on to it while I tell you this story.
That number is going to change.
Ready?
Cool.
Think about your past week.
Where did you spend your time?
For most people, an average 168hr week looks something like this…
Sleep 56 hrs/week
Work/Commute 50 hrs/week
Internet/Social 20 hrs/week
TV/Movies 14 hrs/week
Eating 8 hrs/week
Fun/Friends 6 hrs/week
Sports/Exercise 5 hrs/week
Shopping 4 hrs/week
Miscellaneous 5 hrs/week
Sound about right?
Take a look at the activities and where you spent your time…
How much pleasure, satisfaction, and enjoyment are you getting out of them?
Any surprises?
Now…
Do another evaluation of how satisfied you are with your life.
Be honest.
No one is watching. And you would only be lying to yourself :(
Are you still thinking of the same number?
If yes and that number is 8+, great!
You’re awesome.
You don’t need to be here. Goodbye :)
If your number is 7 or less…
Stick with me.
We’re gonna fix that.
A big chunk of our life is dedicated to activities we do to be happy.
We work – to buy things we want.
We hang out with friends – to have a good time.
We spend hours on social media looking at how amazing everyone else’s life is to… (actually, not too sure about that one)
Fact is…
We are terrible judges of knowing what makes us happy or unhappy because MOST of the things we do are in search of pleasure.
And pleasure is not the same thing as happiness.
If you don’t believe me, ask any addict how happy they are. You’ll get your answer.
What actually makes us happy is:
1) Feeling in-control of ourselves, our lives, and our destiny
2) Growing in a direction that is in-line with how we imagine our lives should be
3) Contributing to something that's bigger than ourselves
If the majority of your time is spent doing stuff that do not support those 3 things… you’re not as well-off as you could be.
For most people, their work is the biggest source of unhappiness.
50 hours a week doing something that isn’t in-line with what you want out of life can be pretty agonizing.
Not only that, but most people feel like they’re a slave to their work, the money it provides them, and the society it feeds into.
The key here is to break free from the mold.
Find your thing.
Take control of your destiny.
And start putting your time into something you actually give a shit about!
Your business
Your job.
You know, that thing you wake up and do every single day?
Should help complete who you are. Not take away from it.
If you don’t feel like what you’re doing is honest to:
1) Who you are
2) What you want out of life
3) And what you want to give back to life
Then you will never feel – as happy, as fulfilled, as successful – as you SHOULD.
